The Walls of Asciano
The ancient walls that enfolded the village of Asciano are still in part preserved and quite visible especially in the area around Donato di Becco Garden.
Built in late Medieval Ages, some of the surviving towers are quite impressive and they seem to reach the sky, whereas the walls, in part, watch over the dwellings of the historical center.
Originally one could enter the village through five gates, of which only one remains, the Sienese gate, heavily altered. This gate guaranteed the access to travellers from Siena, that had followed the ancient Lauretana road.
Until 1944, on the other side of town, stood Massini Gate, unfortunately destroyed by the retreating Nazi Army during World War II.
