Pieve di Sant’Ippolito
It’s the most ancient church in Asciano, as cited in a precious and rare document from Longobard times, dated 714A.D. although there’s evidence that makes us believe that this place had been frequented since Roman times.
Later on it was abandoned and the main church became Saint Agatha, situated within the town walls. The ancient baptisimal font made of stone and decorated with a precious bas relief along its sides, was moved to Saint Agatha, where it is still used nowadays.
It is now private property and thanks to the restoration of the structure requested by the owner , an amazing discovery was made; the plaster was hiding a rare secret: a precious fresco!
Situated above the altar, the fresco represents the Virgin Mary with Child on a throne and on the side a few saints. Through studies carried out recently,in the figure of Saint Ippolito there seems to be a self portrait of the young Raphael, who at the time was travelling in the area with his master Pinturicchio to fresco churches and parishes for the famous Jubilee of Middle Millenium.
