Chiesa di San Francesco
The monastery of Saint Francis and the annexed church dedicated to St. Lawrence were built in the XIIIth century, probably on top of the ancient castle of Asciano.
The church was once completely covered by frescoes, now visible thanks to the restoration works done in the 80s.
In the Archeological and Sacred Art Civic Museum, Palazzo Corboli, are exhibited many of the art works with which this church had been enriched as some altar pieces, some wooden statues among which the wonderful Annunciation by Francesco di Valdambrino, realized in 1410 -11.
Nowadays the church hosts a magnificent altar piece made of polychromatic ceramic, representing a Madonna with Child, Angels and Saints, attributed to Della Robbia.
Legend says that underneath the church some secret underground passages branch out. It seems that no one knows the exact path that they follow. In the last few years the church of Saint Lawrence has become the location for many national and international concerts, organized by the Township of Asciano.
